God in Art: Exploring the Relationship between Religion and Culture

During the season of Pentecost we celebrate the Gospel of Christ going out into the culture. But most of the time, the culture doesn’t want religion in its affairs and religion condemns the culture around it.

Paul Tillich, a Protestant theologian, says that each generation must correlate the message of the Gospel with the questions of the culture around it.

Dan Ratliff is leading a study of Paul Tillich’s theology of culture, using a weekly field trip to San Antonio Museum of Art to explore how to relate our theology with our culture. Each week we view few paintings or sculptures and discuss how they express the ultimate concerns of their history and culture.

We gather in the church parlor to leave the church at 9:45, so that we can be there when SAMA opens at 10:00.  SAMA is free on Sunday mornings before noon. We finish in time to return to LHUMC for the 11:00 worship, or if you attend the 8:30 service, you are free to stay and tour the galleries.
